Offensive line leads City View to blowout win against Ponder

Everyone has a desire to be protected. But when a person not used to protection suddenly has plenty of protection, they remain on high alert and sometimes look for a quick escape route.

Seniors Cade Farrell, Bobby Copeland and Crafton Lindenborn along with sophomore Camron Hudson and freshman Mason Hill are the City View Mustangs offensive line.

Their job is to provide protection for quarterback Isaiah Marks. They provided outstanding protection on Friday night as the Mustangs defeated Ponder 47-6 at Veterans Field on senior night.

The outstanding protection provided by the offensive line is something that Marks is still learning to trust.

“I have to get used to it because I’m still looking for someone trying to hit me. I have to realize that our line is really good, and I just have to get better at trusting them more,” Marks said after passing for 302 yards and five touchdowns.

“They’ve just really progressed over last year,” Marks said. “They’ve gotten bigger, faster, stronger and their really committed to the game this year.”

“It’s just a night and day difference from where we’ve been in the past. They’re just gritty and they play hard,” Hawkins said. “They want to stay on their blocks, and they take it personal if Zeek (Isaiah Marks) gets hit.”

The offensive line has not only improved in their pass protection. They also open large holes for the running backs as evidenced by 150 rushing yards in the first half as City View jumped out to a 35-6 lead.

“They make huge holes for the running backs that are open every time,” Marks raved.

The ability to run the ball effectively opens the playbook for Hawkins and his offensive staff that already possesses a potent passing attack.

“It opens up a lot of things. Other teams can’t do just one thing. If they stack the box, we can throw the ball and if they get out of the box, we can run the ball,” Hawkins said.

Hawkins is also quick to give credit to the work his assistant coaches have put in with the offensive line.

Knowing the Mustangs play in a tough district, Hawkins hopes the offensive line continues to grow throughout the season.

“I hope this is the worst we’re going to be up front,” Hawkins said. “I hope we just continue to get better.”
