Muhammad makes City View history
City View’s Abbas Muhammad admitted to being nervous on his first two attempts in the 3A triple jump Friday.
But the senior calmed down and finished his high school career with a bang, reaching a personal-best 45-5 ½ on his final attempt for a silver, which is the school’s first boys state track medal in school history. Hooks’ Montrell Estell won gold by three inches.
“I was a little nervous, trying to adjust to the atmosphere,” Muhammad said. “After a while I got used to it and I realized I was able to stick around with everyone else.”
Muhammad didn’t get off to a great start, but his 44-9 ¼ on his third attempt put him in a good situation going into the final three jumps. He was sitting in third when he broke 45 feet for the first time in his high school career.
“I knew on that last jump I had I was going to have to go out and reach for it,” Muhammad said. “I just said a prayer, ran as hard as I could, hit the board and I got there.”
