Boys hoops: City View ends long playoff drought
JACKSBORO — The City View Mustangs rallied in the fourth quarter to nip Jacksboro 53-51 Tuesday night and clinch their first playoff spot since 2005.
The Mustangs (15-15, 7-7) held a slim 48-47 lead in the fourth as the two teams went almost three minutes without scoring. But Jeremiah Lucas his a 3-pointer with 1:40 — his only points of the game — to put City View up 51-47. It was free throws to rest of the way to ice the win.
“I could not be more proud of our kids and the way they fought through adversity tonight and all season,” City View coach Bobby Morris said. “We set goals early in the year and through the good and bad they stuck together and achieved something as a team they’ll never forget.”
The Mustangs had jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one period, but the Tigers fought back, cutting the lead to 31-25 at the half and going up 41-39 heading into the fourth.
Tamell Monroe led the Mustangs with 13 points, followed by Austin Lucas with 11. Clay Botello led the Tigers with 20, followed by Michael Harp with 12 and Payton Laake with 11.
The Mustangs will meet No. 5 Brock in bi-district play Monday at 7 p.m. in Graham.
